Smart Charging

Your charger saves you money while you sleep

A basic charger starts the moment you plug in, usually at peak rates. A smart charger shifts your charging to off-peak hours, automatically or via the app, so you pay a fraction of the cost.

Common Questions

EV charger installation FAQ

Straight answers on chargers, costs, installation, and the OZEV grant.

How much does an EV charger cost to install?
Our installations come in between £1,000 and £1,250 fully fitted, including the charger, all wiring, electrical testing, and NAPIT certification. Your exact price depends on which charger you choose and how far the cable run is from your consumer unit. If you're eligible for the OZEV grant, up to £500 comes straight off your invoice. Note: the Tesla Wall Connector isn't on the government's approved chargepoint model list, so the grant only applies to our Ohme chargers.
Which charger is right for me?
We install three chargers. The Ohme ePod is an untethered socket, so you use your own Type 2 cable. The Ohme Home Pro comes with a 5m or 8m tethered cable for plug-in-and-go convenience. The Tesla Wall Connector has the longest cable at 7.3m and a 4-year warranty. All three are 7.4kW smart chargers. We'll recommend the best option during your quote.
How long does installation take?
From quote to a working charger is typically around 3 days. The on-site installation itself takes around half a day for most homes. We'll confirm your date upfront.
What's included in the installation?
Everything. The charger unit, wall mounting, cable run back to your consumer unit (up to 10m included), a dedicated circuit with RCD protection, full electrical testing, NAPIT certification, and our 2-year workmanship warranty.
Do I need to tell my energy supplier?
Not usually. Your installer will submit a DNO notification on your behalf, which is a legal requirement. Most standard home EV charger installations are covered by a simple G98 notification that we handle for you. The Energy Saving Trust has a neutral overview of home EV charging if you want to compare options.
Can I charge my car from solar panels?
Yes. The Ohme chargers have a Solar Boost feature that diverts surplus solar energy to your car. If you already have solar panels or are thinking about them, this means free daytime charging. We install solar too, so we can set the whole system up together.
What is the OZEV grant?
The OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant provides up to £500 off the cost of a home charger installation. It's available to renters, landlords, and flat owners. If you own and live in a house (not a flat), you won't usually qualify, but renters in any property type can. We're an OZEV-authorised installer, so we handle the application and deduct the grant from your invoice. Full details on GOV.UK
Will the charger work with my car?
Yes. All three chargers use the Type 2 connector, which is the UK standard for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The Tesla Wall Connector works with all EVs, not just Tesla models.
Do you offer finance?
Yes. You can spread the cost over fixed monthly payments at 9.9%APR Representative, with no deposit required. Your finance is FCA-regulated with clear terms, fixed repayments, and no hidden fees. Finance is subject to status and affordability.
Can I finance an EV charger install if I'm waiting for the OZEV grant?

Yes. If you qualify for the OZEV Chargepoint Grant, the £500 comes straight off your invoice at the point of install, and finance is arranged on the remaining balance. Worth knowing: most homeowners of houses don't qualify for OZEV, which is limited to renters, landlords and flat owners. Our grants guide covers eligibility, and our finance page has the full terms.

Will applying for charger finance affect my credit score?

The initial quote uses a soft credit search, which doesn't leave a footprint on your credit file and won't affect your score. Only once you accept the offer and proceed does the lender run a hard search to finalise the agreement. That means you can check what you'd be approved for without any risk to your credit. See our finance page for full details.
