A Comparison Between Electric And Gas Boilers

Your boiler is one of the most crucial elements in your home, responsible for everything from heating the water you will use to wash, shower and cook to providing warmth during the colder seasons. A well-maintained boiler will keep costs down and provide you with reliable heat when you need it.

The most common type of boiler in the UK is a gas boiler, but recently a rise in electric boilers has been seen across the country. Here is a short comparison between the two.

Boiler controls

Gas Boiler

A gas boiler utilises natural gas as a fuel. Using this fuel, it will generate heat to be used in the central heating system of your home, as well as the water supply. Energy suppliers will provide gas on-demand from the network to customers, so people can have fuel whenever they need it.

As previously mentioned, a gas boiler is the most common type of boiler in the UK, with over 80% of homes currently on the gas network. It is therefore easy to repair as thousands of handymen will be experts in the field. One of the benefits of gas boilers is that they are cheaper to run, so if you’re looking to keep costs down to a minimum, gas can be the best choice. They can also meet the demands of a house easier than an electric boiler.

Electric Boiler

Electric boilers run on electricity instead of fossil fuels, taking money from the grid instead of a gas network. They are much less common in the UK but are a great option for smaller homes and flats that have less heating demands.

They are considered a more environmentally-friendly option than gas, as the power is a renewable source of energy instead of one that causes emissions and isn’t unlimited. Electric boilers are usually highly efficient, so the energy that a boiler wastes will be kept to a minimum. There is also no risk of a carbon monoxide leak and maintenance is often not needed as much as a gas boiler.
