While you may be making the most of the sunshine and the hot weather, it’s always best to be looking ahead. The winter weather always hits sooner than you think, leaving many to scramble to try and keep warm, when all that stress could’ve been avoided with a bit of forward planning.
So while you’re enjoying the summer, get your home prepped for the coming winter. Here are some tips on how to do so.
Test Your Heating
Odds are you haven’t had your heating on at all during the summer months, so it’s probably a good idea to do some maintenance. Check if your radiators need bleeding, the boiler is working and clean off any vents.
A boiler service by a Gas Safety registered engineer will give you peace of mind. This way you can easily see if your system is ready to go when you need it and if there are any problems you have plenty of time to repair them.
Insulate Pipes
Water freezing pipes can very quickly lead to them bursting, which could cause a lot of expensive damage. Insulate your pipes to prevent freezing and bursting from occurring. While doing so keep an eye for any cracks and holes near the pipes that cold air could use to sneak in and damage them.
Check Your Roof
Roof tiles can become loose throughout the year, and this can lead to issues in the winter. The much more frequent amount of rain could cause a leak inside your home, and cold air will pour in from outside. Make sure a professional roofer comes to your property to examine your roof. They can let you know if there are any problem areas that you need to get repaired.
Home Security
Crime rates rise in the winter, as there are more night-time hours for criminals to be working. Make sure all the doors, windows, fences and gates to your property have locks that are working properly. Outdoor lights with sensors are a great security method, as anybody approaching your house will be lit up. This also helps if you need to go out at night to take the bins out and need a bit of light to see by.
